Do the projects need to be fired?
|
|
No, the projects are in what is called "bisque" form and have already been fired. Art In History includes stains that state specifically "do
not fire". This allows our projects to be used in almost any setting without needing access to a kiln.
*ALL PROJECTS ARE FOR DECORATIVE USE ONLY*
**It is possible to re-fire the products again however you must use a cone 06 glaze that is NOT supplied by Art In History. If the piece is
fired using the stains supplied by Art In History you will ruin the replica.
|
|
What is the size of the student kits?
|
|
With such a great focus on education Art In History products have been produced with "smaller hands" in mind. Projects are actual scale, or
may have been scaled up or down for convenient use.
We have 3 dimensions of student kits that vary by project. These are not the actual size of the item just a standard student kit box size.
Actual piece size can be found in the product description.
1) 7 x 7 x 7 (12 kits per case)
2) 6 x 6 x 4 ( 15 kits per case)
3) 9 x 2 x 7 ( 18 kits per case)

Why was Pottery used as the art medium for each of
your projects?
|
|
Throughout history archaeologists have used pottery as a basis for dating the civilization and culture of the discovered site. Pottery had a
utilitarian use and represented a prized possession used in everyday life. The face of the pottery was like a canvas in which the potters used to
express themselves. Therefore the motifs represented the events of the day usually depicting politics, religion, the environment, and the
day-to-day life of the time period.

|
What kind of research do you do to insure
authenticity of the project?
|
|
The company uses multiple researchers for creation of the product. The historic period is chosen first by a board of the company using
curriculum-based standards. Once the period is chosen, the researchers are then directed to look into all aspects of the time frame using the nine
standards set up by the company. These nine standards are History, Geography, Literature, Humanities, Culture, Vocabulary, Writing, Language Arts
and Art. The program then goes to the art researcher who, in addition to employing the nine basic curriculum standards, combs through museum
references and cross references art guides to insure color and form is replicated as close to the original piece as possible. In some cases, the
size of the piece is adjusted to replicate in miniature form so that the piece is easier to handle by the students.

How do I introduce this project into the
classroom?
|
|
A. As we developed the project we considered this to be one of the primary functions for the teacher. Therefore each project has been
developed around a prominent individual who is historically accurate and appropriate to the time frame.
To use an example, we will use the Greek Geometric Period, circa 750 BC. The poet Homer who wrote the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey" lived during
this time period and his writings reflect the Greek Geometric Period. Our lesson plans encourage the teacher to introduce the product by saying to
the students, "Today we are going to create a water vessel to be used by Homer. To understand how to decorate the water vessel we must understand
what was happening in Homer's life. We are going to be following curriculum studies from the HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, CULTURE, LANGUAGE ARTS,
VOCABULARY, ART, HUMANITIES, READING , and WRITING of the time period when Homer lived and wrote."
If the school teaches drama then the teacher may introduce another of the humanities and have a student play act Homer. The teacher could also
assign various parts of the curriculum to student or students to teach other students about the subject matter. Another approach could be the use
of multiple courses taught by individual teachers culminating into either an art class or a class where the art is painted. This will produce a
greater benefit from the project and make it very cost effective for the school system.
|
|
What is included in each project?
|
|
A. Each project is designed to include everything the teacher will need to successfully complete the lesson. A kit is provided for each
student which includes the following:
1) The Pottery Replica.
2) Sponge to paint the undercoat.
3) Paintbrush for detail painting.
4) Rubber band for creating circles (some projects).
6) Paint pallets.
7) Craft paper (for sketching and to protect the desk or table).
8) Individual box with a place for the student's name.
9) An Artist Certification preprinted with a description of the Art Replica and the name of the school. In cases where the project has been
donated, the donor's name will also appear on the Artist Certification (if so desired by the donor). There is a place for the teacher to place the
student's name on the Artist Certification.(bulk orders only)
*With a minimum of 18 student kits of one specific item the teacher will receive a choice of Teacher's Guide (see "how it works" tab) and all
the stains necessary to complete the projects
**Individual/home school kits are supplied with stain and download code for lesson ($8.49 per project)
|
|
How much do the kits cost and do you have any
suggestions to pay for them?
|
|
The company has made every effort to keep the cost down but still supply a quality product. The current price for each student kit containing
all of the listed components is $5.95 per kit (with a minimum purchase of 18 kits... individual kits priced @ $8.49)
1) This project lends itself to many types of Grants through various Arts groups. The National Endowment for the Arts is a possible source.
2) Since businesses can be recognized through the Artist Certifications which are sent home to parents, a local business might provide the
projects as a philanthropy to the school.
3) Art In History Charitable Foundation which is an IRS 501c3 approved Foundation that could assist as a conduit for the donation and handle
the logistics for the business and the school.
4) An individual parent or parents might choose to make a tax deductible donation to the Foundation, designating the school and even the
classroom to receive the donated materials.
5) Other types of fundraising events such as PTA/PTO sponsored donut sales, car washes, etc, are always a possibility.
6) Of course, a request may be sent to each parent to cover their child's cost of the program. (sample parent letter)

|
