Teacher's Guide - Mongolian Empire - Kashan Lusterware Bowl Details

This reusable guide covers 1100-1368 and such key people as Temujin, Genghis Khan, and Kublai Khan. It should be used in conjunction with the Mongolian Empire Kashan Lusterware Bowl (EDU 011). Kashan is a city in Iran that is known for its lusterware industry. Luster-painted pottery was produced in Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Syria, and later in Europe. Mongol invasions in the 13th century did not slow the lusterware production in Kashan. The Mongol conquest brought many diverse cultural traditions into one Empire. This cultural interaction influenced technology, sciences, philosophy and the arts. It unified people, resulting in more foreign trade between Chinese, Islamic, Persian and Iranian cultures. Lusterware is a type of pottery with a reflective sheen, produced by metallic oxides and an overglaze finish. Luster was used on plates, bowls, ewers, and tile. This luxury ceramic is known for its multicolored figural decoration and polychrome surface. Kashan style decoration includes the use of geometric, zoomorphic, botanical, and figurative designs.
