Teacher's Guide - World War I - Wilson Presidential Plate Details

This reusable guide covers 1914-1919, WWI and President Woodrow Wilson. This guide is to be used in conjunction with the Presidential plate replica (EDU 106). It was chosen as the official china for the White House by President and Mrs. Wilson in 1918. It features a dark blue and gold border around the presidential seal. The Wilson china service was the first presidential china to be made in the United States. The tradition of presidential china was started by George Washington. He knew the importance of establishing an image for our new nation. He also understood the social need for a fashionable dining table. Presidential china reflects the personal taste of the presidential family, as well as the image the executive wishes to portray to the world. Walter Scott Lenox became the first American to create presidential china, which was developed by his chief designer, Frank Holmes. With President Wilson, the proud day arrived when presidential china was designed, made, and decorated by American craftsmen.
